Newbie Builds: Sun EZ-3 SX

Rob had mercy on my poor soul. For my first ever build, he threw me a blue Sun EZ-3 SX. Even though the outside of the box stated clearly that the trike was "partially assembled", I had no idea just how assembled it already was until I opened the box.

Inside the box were:

  • three wheels (it is a trike, after all)
  • handlebars with brakes levers and shifters already mounted
  • the frame with drivetrain, cranks, rear cassette, rear derailleur, and chain management already installed
  • the rear wheel cage
  • the recumbent seat, seatback, and adjustment accessories
  • miscellaneous bolts, nuts, washers, et cetera
  • reflectors

Keep in mind for a moment that probably the most difficult aspect of a build lies in managing the drivetrain. Now remember that the EZ-3 SX already has all of that assembled. What the?? All the hard work is done!

Lacking any directions whatsoever, I set to work building the EZ-3 using another one in the shop as a guide/template. I first fitted on the rear wheel cage and got the wheels mounted so I could stand the whole thing upright. Then I set to work securing the handles to the front fork, cabling the front brake, mounting the seat, mounting the seatback and its posts, and then running the chain between the rear cassette to the axle.

Before I knew it, I had built a trike! All in all, it took me about 2.5 hours from the moment I opened the box until I called it done. I was quite proud of myself until I realized how much of the work had already been done by Sun.

Still, my first build went well. Rob will be showing me how to go about tuning it properly. After that, I'll take it for a quick test ride.

And then? Why, it's on to the next build of course! Keep an eye out here to see what Rob hands me next!
