Coding rally video
Written by Travis on 2009.06.17 at 10:37:12

I've started watching all of the rally footage and figuring out what's useful and what isn't. What is useful is seeing just how closely people were tailing me during the 37 mile ride.

Answer: really close.

RBR rally group photo
Written by Travis on 2009.06.16 at 01:17:11

If you happened to look up, you probably noticed we have our new group photo posted.  The high res version is not yet available, but you can grab a lower res version for download.

We're happy to say that the smiles didn't leave the faces of our participants for the rest of the weekend. Well, except during a touch of painted arrow confusion that we're chalking up to some bored kids.

A lot of video footage was captured during the rally, which means it's going to be a while before we post any of it. I estimate that I have about 5 hours of raw footage to go through, cut up, put back together, and then soundtrack. It'll be worth the wait.

Rally 2009 gallery started
Written by Travis on 2009.06.13 at 10:22:54

Before the rally even officially started, we already have photos showing off the all new delta Aergo.  Everyone who has tried both tadpole and delta agrees that the delta version is far superior.

Check out the Rally 2009 gallery to see photos of it or take a look at the video we shot earlier today .  And check back Saturday and Sunday night for more rally photos.

Here comes the recumbent rally!
Written by Travis on 2009.06.12 at 23:12:05

If you're on your way to our 2009 rally, you have plenty of reasons to be excited.  Here's what's going on this weekend:

  • Two speakers at the pre-ride gathering. One to discuss his trans-US tour, the other to show his homebuilt folder.
  • Finally rideable Aergos.  Yes, TWO!  One built around a Catrike with a BionX and the other built on a Hase Kettwiesel. No, we haven't talked about the Kett fitting at all yet. Rally goers will be the first to see it.
  • A fully assembled Carbent carbon fiber bike from BentUp Cycles. You'll forgive us if we relegate this one to "ogling only" for the weekend.
  • Rides with 60 other recumbent enthusiasts.
  • Dinner, music, and conversation Saturday night.
The weather situation is looking stable. Cloudy skies until 3PM Saturday and partly cloudy on Sunday.  If that holds, all will be well.  It might get a bit rainy during dinner, but the same happened last year without dampening spirits.  Possibly, perhaps, due to the consumption of spirits.

And if you can't make it to the rally, we're going to attempt to go a little media crazy this time around.  If all works well, we'll get those presentations recorded and posted for everybody else to see.  And if you know me at all, you know there will be plenty of photos to chuck into our rally gallery.

Rally registration now open
Written by Travis on 2009.02.10 at 07:11:55

Registration for the 2009 RBR Recumbent Bike and Trike Rally is now open.  We're a flexible lot, so you can register both online and offline as we have harnessed the latest and greatest technology (PayPal, printers) to give you the options you deserve.

The registration fee is $60, which gets you the Friday evening buffet, Saturday evening meal and entertainment, the Saturday/Sunday rides, tuning, and demos.

If you've never been to an RBR Rally before, be sure to read up on it so you know what to expect.  Mostly, though, expect a great time!

We'll put together a rally resources guide soon to lay out the local restaurants and lodging.

2009 RBR Rally set for June 12-14
Written by Travis on 2009.02.02 at 23:16:50

The moment you've all been waiting for is here!  We now have the dates for the 2009 RBR Recumbent Bike and Trike Rally.  Or, for short, the 09RBRRBTR.

Festivities will begin the evening of June 12th with our usual pre-rally social hour and route review.  Then we'll meet up Saturday morning at the Military Museum in Boalsburg to start the rides, demo some bents, and get together later for dinner and conversation.  On the 14th, one last ride for those able to stay in town an extra few hours.

Details will be up on our Rally page by the end of the week, and we're hoping to allow for online registration and payment this year.

Speaking of payment, we'll be raising the price of the rally $5 this year to $60. We hope this won't be too much of an inconvenience, but the increase was necessary to make sure we at least break even this year.

We hope to see many old friends and plenty of new ones at the rally, so spread the word!

Reverse Gear sale for rally goers
Written by Travis on 2008.10.04 at 04:35:16

Len and Judi, proprietors of Reverse Gear IncThose of you who attended the 2008 RBR Rally likely remember Reverse Gear , who premiered their recumbent specific clothing line at the pre-rally dinner and then followed up with a booth the day of the rally itself.

Well, if you were kind enough to hand over your contact info during the rally, keep an eye out in your e-mail inbox for a code (no, we're not going to reveal it here) that will net you 15% off recumbent men's and women's long-sleeve jerseys good until November 15, 2008.

It is already growing chill in the northeast, so the timing couldn't be better.

The Ballad of BentJay
Written by Travis on 2008.08.12 at 09:20:49

Chipmunks attacking one anotherThere was an ... incident ... during the 2008 RBR rally in which some Pennsylvania wildlife perpetrated an attack upon one of the intrepid trikers. This incident has served as an inspiration for song.

BlindTriker, another rally attendee, posted the following shortly after arriving home:

"Wow! What an incredible experience. Super people, great rides, amazing food and superb live music. A priceless weekend in beautiful (and lush) State College, Pa.

Certainly the highlight of everyone's weekend were the stunt antics of the ever wacky "Bent Jay". A frequent contributor to BROL, Bent Jay is a supremely talented yet humble man, and is well known to this blog. I am not ashamed to say that, hey.... I love the guy. To prove it I have written an ode to honor the "Bent Jay" who is both recumbent triker as well as renaissance man. Truly a man for the new millennium.

I was tempted to write this as an epic, something to rival the "Iliad" or "Odyssey". Instead I've put set to a tune somewhat more familiar. See if you recognize it. Bent Jay truly has his mojo workin'.
It goes something like this:
